Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)
Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica
If you or someone you know suffers from enlarged male breasts, there is something that can be done about this embarrassing condition. Referred to as “gynecomastia,” enlarged male breasts are more common than you might think. Men may experience enlargement in one or both breasts, making it emotionally stressful to undress in front of others or go shirtless.
Gynecomastia can result from a variety of factors, including steroid or other drug use, alcohol use, weight gain, cancer or other diseases, or genetic predisposition.
Steps of Male Breast Reduction
As in a female breast reduction surgery, liposuction and/or excision can be used to remove excess tissue. Incisions are made in the areola/nipple area for inconspicuous scarring. If liposuction is necessary, Dr. Kim will remove fat cells using a hollow tube called a cannula. If hard glandular tissue is present after liposuction, Dr. Kim will remove it as well using a scalpel. A drain is inserted into the area to help remove any fluid build-up. Most patients will be asked to wear a compression garment to protect the delicate healing tissue and encourage rapid recovery.
Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery
Bruising and swelling is normal and should subside over time. Most male breast reduction patients are able to return to work at the one-week mark, but Dr. Kim will restrict physical activity for several weeks. After the healing period, you will notice a firmed, tightened breast appearance with an improved masculine contour. Results of breast reduction are permanent; however it is recommended that you avoid significant weight gain to prevent recurrence of gynecomastia.
Are You a Good Breast Reduction Candidate?
Dr. Kim will first want to make sure that you have enough excess tissue to make surgical removal worthwhile. For some men with a small amount of excess fat in the breasts, weight loss and pectoral exercises may be sufficient. Also, you should be in good physical condition and have no pre-existing conditions that could inhibit your healing process. It is also important that breast reduction candidates have realistic goals for this surgery and fully understand the benefits and limitations of a surgical solution to gynecomastia.
