What is BOTOX ® Cosmetic?
BOTOX ® Cosmetic is a safe, FDA-approved product made from a protein called botulinum toxin, which is produced by bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. BOTOX ® Cosmetic is used to reduce the facial signs of aging.
How does BOTOX ® Cosmetic work?
BOTOX® Cosmetic relaxes muscle contractions leading to wrinkles. Shortly after being injected, BOTOX ® blocks the release of a chemical that causes your facial muscles to contract. Although these muscles become relaxed, BOTOX ® Cosmetic will not cause you to lose control over facial movement or inhibit the expressiveness of your face.
What can BOTOX ® Cosmetic treat?
BOTOX ® treats fine lines and deep wrinkles in certain facial areas, including:
- Between the eyebrows
- Crow’s feet around the eyes
- Around the lips
- Forehead area
- Frown lines
BOTOX ® does not replace lost volume in wrinkles, but it does prevent the muscle activity responsible for wrinkles. Often used to complement BOTOX ®, dermal fillers restore lost facial volume.
How long does BOTOX ® Cosmetic last?
A single injection of BOTOX ® typically provides results for 3 to 6 months. Results first become visible within a couple days after the injection, and these results will continue to improve over the next 30 days. BOTOX ® re-treatments may be necessary three to four times a year.
BOTOX ® results are not permanent like a facelift, but provide a minimally invasive way to reduce wrinkles without downtime.
Is BOTOX ® Cosmetic safe?
Due to ample amounts of misinformation, many people ask “is BOTOX® Cosmetic safe?” BOTOX ® Cosmetic has been approved for use by the FDA and safely used by millions of men and women in the United States for many years. Side effects include redness and irritation at the injection side. These are temporary and should completely diminish within one to two days following your procedure.
Rare complications include headache and nausea, although these complications are unlikely to occur with the cosmetic use of BOTOX®. This facial rejuvenation treatment has a long-standing safety record.
What happens if I stop using BOTOX ® Cosmetic?
If you choose to discontinue injections, your face will simply return to its natural state. BOTOX ® Cosmetic does not advance the aging process, and can be discontinued without any additional consequences.
