Enlarged male breasts can be an embarrassing problem, which may occur due to various factors. Heredity, hormonal fluctuations, disease, steroid use, excess weight gain, or alcohol or substance abuse may cause this condition, which is clinically called gynecomastia. It can make a male patient emotionally distressed or dissatisfied with his aesthetic appearance.
Gynecomastic can be successfully corrected with male breast reduction cosmetic surgery. The procedure should only be performed by an experienced surgeon who has performed gynecomastia surgeries in the past. Double board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides this procedure to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding communities.
Candidacy
To determine a man’s candidacy for gynecomastia cosmetic surgery, the surgeon will first evaluate whether he has enough excess breast tissue to make a surgical procedure worthwhile. If the patient is bothered by only a small amount of excess fat tissue in the breasts, it may be reduced with a simple weight loss program or pectoral exercises.
Male breast reduction candidates should be in good general health, and having no such medical condition that could pose risk during or after surgery. The candidate should have a moderate body weight and a good amount of skin elasticity to achieve best results.
Diagnosis and Tests
A physical exam of the breast area will be followed by a careful assessment of the breast tissue, abdomen and genitals. To determine what caused gynecomastia, the plastic surgeon may order mammograms and blood tests. Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas for male breast reduction surgery.
Procedure
Excess fat tissue from the male breast may be removed using liposuction surgery or through surgical excision. The surgeon will place discreet incisions in the areola and nipple area to keep the scarring minimal. In case of liposuction, the unwanted fat cells will be removed using a cannula. If any hard glandular tissue is present after liposuction, it will be removed with a scalpel.
Once the procedure is completed, the surgeon will place a drain tube into the incision area to prevent fluid build-up under the skin. Incisions will then be closed carefully. Most patients can return home in a few hours after the surgery. A compression garment will be provided, which must be worn for several weeks to expedite healing and recovery.
The entire procedure can be completed in about two hours. The surgeon may use local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia to perform this surgery.
Recovery
Following the surgery, swelling and bruising will be present for a few weeks. Swelling will fade away gradually, while bruising will be eliminated faster. Most patients can resume their normal routine in about one week or return to their workplace. However, restrictions on activities will be advised by the surgeon for a few weeks.
Results
Once the swelling subsides, the patient will be able to notice a tighter, firmer breast appearance with an enhanced masculine contour. Results are permanent, but the patient should maintain a stable body weight as far as possible.
