Chin augmentation cosmetic surgery is a suitable treatment option for anyone who is unhappy with the shape of their chin in relation to other facial features. Both women and men choose chin augmentation, which can be performed using facial implants for chin enlargement or advancement.
During the initial consultation, the surgeon will educate the patient on all aspects of this procedure and help them make the right choice. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides chin augmentation surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding communities.
What does Chin Augmentation do?
Chin augmentation procedure is designed to make the chin more proportionate and provide balance to the rest of the face. A weak or recessive chin can make the neck appear fleshy. The size of a normal nose gets accentuated due to a weak chin, or a large nose will look particularly prominent.
Chin enhancement through chin implant cosmetic surgery can bring harmony to the facial features and improve the balance of the overall facial structure. In some cases, chin augmentation may be performed in conjunction with rhinoplasty to create an ideal balance between the two features.
Candidacy
A suitable candidate for chin augmentation will typically have one or more of the following characteristics:
- Recessed chin
- Pointed or squared chin
- Prominent nose
- Fleshy neck
Patients who are seeking rhinoplasty, cheek implants or lip augmentation may also be good candidates for chin augmentation as a combined procedure. Patients with a large nose or poorly defined jaw can also benefit from cosmetic chin surgery.
Procedure
To enlarge a recessive chin, the surgeon will recommend the use of chin implants to supplement the existing bone at the front of the jaw below the teeth. The implant will be placed under the skin to provide a permanent boost to the strength and definition of the chin. Patients can achieve a proportionate and attractive chin that appears completely natural.
The procedure is typically performed as an outpatient surgery. The duration of the surgery can be anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours, depending on the complexity of the case and the number of combined procedures involved. The surgeon will determine whether the procedure is to be performed using general or local anesthesia.
The surgeon will make an incision below the chin or inside of the mouth between the lower lip and the gum. The risk of infection increases in case of intra-mouth incisions, but it will avoid any external scarring. Through the incision, the surgeon will insert the chin implant and position it in front of the jawbone.
The surgeon will then check the implant for proper balance and may adjust or modify the implant to ensure the desired look. Once this is accomplished, they suture the chin implant into place. Sutures inside the mouth will be absorbed in about 10 days. If sutures are placed externally, they will be removed in about the same time.
