Is Breast Augmentation Painful?
During breast augmentation, you will be under general anesthesia. It will be as though you are asleep throughout the entire procedure. You will not feel any pain or have any memory of the surgery.
As part of what to expect after a breast augmentation, you may experience:
- Mild pain
- Discomfort
- Soreness
- Swelling
Over-the-counter pain medications can often alleviate any post-operative pain, and your breast surgeon may prescribe stronger painkillers.

Breast Augmentation Surgery
Before the day of your breast augmentation, you may want to take some preparatory steps to make things easier, including:
- Prepare and freeze some meals
- Complete any household chores
- Wear loose-fitting clothing
- You must arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery
- You must arrange for someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours
During the surgery, your doctor will make the incisions through which the implant will be inserted. Depending on which breast enlargement options you choose, the incision will be around your nipple, in your armpit, or at the fold underneath your breast.
A “pocket” will be created for the breast implant. Prior to the surgery, you will have chosen the placement of the breast implant, either below the muscle or above it. The implant will be placed, and Dr. Kim will ensure symmetry, balance and position before completing the surgery. Depending on the specifics of your procedure, breast augmentation surgery will take about 1 to 2 hours.
You will not feel anything during the surgery, and when you wake up your breasts will be wrapped in gauze. At first, your breasts will appear swollen and they may seem positioned high on your chest. Swelling will decrease with time and the breast implants will settle into position. You will see the final results of your surgery after 3 to 4 months, or longer depending on the specifics of your procedure.
