Dermabrasion
Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are two safe and effective non-surgical medical spa procedures to rejuvenate facial skin. Dermabrasion is significantly more invasive than microdermabrasion, but it also produces more dramatic and longer lasting results.
At the time of your initial consultation, you should discuss the pros and cons of both treatment options with your surgeon in order to make an appropriate choice. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides dermabrasion and microdermabrasion treatments to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations.
What is dermabrasion?
Dermabrasion makes use of a specialized high-speed rotating instrument to “sand” away the topmost layers of the skin, which include dead and damaged cells. As the outer layers are gently removed, it paves the way for renewed skin growth, which is smoother and younger looking. The procedure can effectively eliminate various types of skin imperfections from the face.
What is microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a minimally abrasive procedure compared to dermabrasion. It involves the use of a handheld device with micro rollers to remove the dead and damaged skin cells from the superficial layers. The treatment process is based on the principle of exfoliation to generate new, youthful skin in the place of old and damaged skin.
What to expect from these treatments?
Dermabrasion can help mitigate or completely remove facial scars caused due to acne, surgery, or injury. It is also effective in lightening or removing age spots, sun damage, wrinkles, and tattoo scars. After the dermabrasion procedure, the treated sites of the skin will form a crust that gradually falls off to reveal fresh skin underneath. The new skin will be pink or reddish initially, and will slowly acquire the natural skin color of the face and body.
Microdermabrasion is also known as a “power peel,” which involves the use of a spray of micro crystals to get rid of superficial skin imperfections, such as fine lines, shallow acne scars, and dull skin texture. Microdermabrasion can also improve the appearance of age spots, brown spots, and sun damaged skin. The treatment is minimally invasive, and involves very little downtime or discomfort.
Dermabrasion is an Invasive Treatment
Although dermabrasion is not a cosmetic surgery, it is considerably invasive and may involve the use of general or local anesthesia with IV sedation. The procedure may take up to two hours, depending on the extent of surface area to be treated.
You will require about one to two weeks for recovery following dermabrasion treatment. Skin redness, inflammation and irritation are temporary side effects, which may be expected after the procedure. You will need to take prescription pain medications in the initial recovery phase.
Microdermabrasion is Minimally Invasive
Microdermabrasion only works on the superficial skin layers, which have dead skin cells. It does not penetrate into the living tissue underneath. The mild exfoliation process will help to renew and refresh old or dull looking facial skin. The procedure is shorter and involves minimal discomfort. You may only require a numbing cream to be applied prior to the treatment. Recovery is much faster compared to dermabrasion, and you can return to your normal routine in about two to three days.
