Multiple steps will be involved in any major plastic surgery procedure, such as breast enlargement.
While the surgeon may adopt different surgical techniques, depending on the patient’s unique needs, it will not have an effect on the overall procedure steps involved. The surgeon will need to individualize breast enlargement to meet the patient’s particular needs.
During the initial consultation, the surgeon will explain the various procedure steps to the patient. This will enable the patient to achieve familiarity with breast implant surgery and overcome any initial anxiety regarding the procedure.
Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides breast implant surgery to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations.
Anesthesia
Once the patient is brought into the surgery room, she will be placed under anesthesia. Breast enlargement cosmetic surgery typically necessitates general anesthesia, which will be administered by an anesthesiologist or a certified anesthetist nurse. They will remain in the surgery room during to procedure to oversee the patient’s response.
Nausea, grogginess, and other mild side effects may last for a few hours, following which the patient is typically allowed to return home. She will need to ask someone responsible to drive her back home after her surgery. The patient may also need aftercare for the initial two to three days of the recovery period.
Incision Placement
After anesthesia, the surgeon will make incisions in discreet locations to minimize any future scarring. Common locations for the incisions include beneath the breast crease, in the underarm region, around the areola border, or in some cases, in the navel area.
During the pre-op consultation and surgical planning, the surgeon will determine the location and size of the incisions. They will evaluate the patient’s breast structure, the size and type of implants chosen, and the patient’s personal cosmetic goals. At every stage of the breast enlargement planning process, the patient’s feedback will be taken.
Implant Placement
Breast implants may be placed beneath the pectoral muscle or in front of the pectoral muscle right behind the breast tissue. The surgeon will make a decision on the implant placement after assessing the size of the implant and considering the unique breast anatomy of the patient. They will inform the patient about the advantages and limitations of each placement option to enable them to make a judicious decision.
Incision Closure
After placing the implants and adjusting them into position in the breast tissue, the surgeon will seal the incisions with traditional or absorbable sutures. They will place temporary drain tubes under the incision areas to collect excess fluid. The patient must ensure that the incision sites are kept dry and clean to reduce the risk of infection development.
Bandages and Surgical Bra
After the cosmetic surgery is complete, the surgeon will cover the incision site in bandages. In some days, a special surgical bra will replace the bandages. The patient will need to wear this surgical bra all the time for a few weeks, according to the surgeon’s instructions.
