Am I a good candidate for breast reduction?
Large breasts cause many complications for women, including significant neck, back, and shoulder pain. The strain that heavy breasts places on your body can lead to other health problems later in life, including:
- Poor posture
- Skeletal deformities
- Breathing problems
If you avoid exercise and other physically strenuous activities because of your breast size and the pain it causes you, a breast reduction will not only provide you with relief and restore your self-confidence, it can also protect your future health.
How is a breast reduction performed?
You will be placed under general anesthesia while your breast reduction is performed to ensure you remain in a relaxed, unconscious state throughout the procedure. Dr. Kim will make an incision encircling your areola (nipple) and down the center of the breast. Dr. Kim utilizes a special technique to minimize the incision underneath the breast that will be well-concealed by both bras and swimsuits. Once the incision has been made, Dr. Kim will remove excess tissue, fat, and skin from your breasts. Your areolas are usually relocated to a higher position, and can be reshaped or made smaller if desired.
What can I expect during the recovery process?
After your breast reduction, you will return home with a supportive dressing that holds your breasts in a symmetrical position as they heal. Dr. Kim will provide you with a list of post-operative care instructions that should be carefully followed to avoid potential complications during the healing process. With the aid of oral medication, any initial pain or discomfort will gradually subside during the first week. After approximately 7–10 days, you will be able to return to light activities. Scarring generally fades after about 6 months to a year.
Will my insurance cover the cost of a breast reduction?
Since breast reductions are usually performed for both medical and cosmetic reasons, most insurance providers will cover or significantly assist you with the cost of your surgery. If necessary, Dr. Kim can provide you with documentation to present to your insurance company, showing how a breast reduction will improve your quality of life.
