What is Otoplasty Plastic Surgery?

Tag Archives: beverly hills

What is Otoplasty Plastic Surgery? | Beverly Hills | Los AngelesEar reshaping surgery or otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery procedure aimed at correcting the size, shape or appearance of one or both ears to bring them in proportion to the rest of the face and head. Otoplasty is one of the few cosmetic procedures that may be performed on children, apart from adults, as long as the child has attained complete ear development. Ear shape deformities usually occur from birth, and can be improved easily with otoplasty.

The plastic surgeon will carefully assess the shape and condition of the ear in relation to the facial and head anatomy, and then recommend an appropriate otoplasty surgical plan. The surgeon’s goal should be to achieve the desired results in a less invasive manner as far as possible. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides otoplasty to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations.

Candidates

Any healthy individual who is bothered by the appearance of oversized, misshaped, asymmetrical or flapping ears can be a good candidate for otoplasty. Children with deformed or poorly shaped ears can also receive this cosmetic surgery procedure if they meet one or more of the following conditions:

  • The child’s age is at least five years, and the ear cartilage has achieved full growth and stability.
  • The child is not suffering from any untreated ear infection.
  • The child is able to comprehend the surgeon’s advice and cooperate for a successful surgery.

Teens and adults will make equally good candidates for otoplasty. Dr. Kim is a board certified plastic surgeon receiving patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas for otoplasty.

Surgical Procedure

Otoplasty may be performed using mild general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. If the ears are significantly protruding, the surgeon may build or enhance the anti-helical fold within the ear’s rim. The surgeon will also reduce the enlarged conchal cavity at the same time.

Placement of the incisions will usually be behind the ears so that the scars are minimally exposed. In a few cases, the ears may have to be made on the front side, but they will still be made within the ear folds. Internal sutures will be used to secure the newly shaped cartilage into the desired position.

The incisions will be closed with external sutures once the procedure has been completed. As long as otoplasty is performed by a skilled surgeon, the results can be natural looking and aesthetically pleasing. The good thing about otoplasty is that the results will usually be permanent.

Recovery

Recovery period can vary between two patients depending on whether one or both ears have been operated upon, and the extent of surgery performed. A majority of patients will be in a position to resume their normal routine or return to work in about one week.

During the first few days, the patient may use pain medication to stay comfortable. Bruising and swelling will reduce considerably from second week. External sutures will usually be removed during the first post-op appointment at the end of the first week.

Otoplasty Plastic Surgery | Ear Reshaping | Beverly Hills |Los AngelesDefects in the shape of one or both ears can be a cause of frustration and low self-esteem among adults as well as kids. In many cases, the oddly shaped or protruding ears may occur by birth, but an injury to the ear may also cause a shape deformity. Otoplasty is a successful and proven cosmetic surgery treatment to restore a desirable and natural looking shape and size of the ears.

Dr. Eugene Kim is a board certified plastic surgeon providing otoplasty, which is also known as ear reshaping or ear pinning surgery. Dr. Kim will correct oversized, asymmetrical or awkward looking ears using advanced surgical techniques to make the procedure less invasive and more targeted. Dr. Kim provides otoplasty to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations.

Candidacy

An individual who is bothered by the appearance of prominent or oddly shaped ears may be a good candidate for otoplasty. Prior to considering a patient for this cosmetic surgery, the surgeon will assess the patient’s general health condition, overall facial anatomy, and their personal aesthetic needs and goals. If the ear has suffered damage due to an injury, ear reconstruction along with reshaping may have to be performed.

Children who have attained full ear growth can also make fabulous candidates for otoplasty as long as they are of an age where they can choose the procedure with the basic understanding of why they want to receive it. Kids who are unhappy or shy in their peer group because of the odd shape of ears may undergo this surgery.

Procedure

The ear primarily comprises cartilage, which can be manipulated by the plastic surgeon to create the desired shape or size. The goal is to create a shape that is in harmony with other facial features and is well-proportioned to the size of the head. It is also important to ensure that both ears match each other in a mirrored fashion.

The patient should have realistic expectations, and should be made aware by the surgeon that the ears cannot be a perfect identical match. It will anyway look unnatural, while the aim of the procedure is to create natural looking ears. To make the procedure less invasive, in many cases, a skilled surgeon will be able to alter only one ear to achieve a balanced appearance. However, sometimes the patient may require correction in both ears.

Once the necessary changes are performed, the surgeon will place sutures. These will be removed in about one week after the otoplasty. Incisions will be made behind the ear to ensure that scarring remains minimally exposed. Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas for ear reshaping surgery and various other aesthetic procedures.

Recovery

Following otoplasty, an average patient will be able to resume their normal routine or return to work in about one week. Strenuous physical activities will have to be avoided for about two weeks to allow the healing to be completed.

Liposuction in Beverly Hills - Safely Melt Fat and Tighten Skin‎Liposuction is one of the top five most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the US today. The procedure is designed to reduce or remove unwanted fat deposits from specific areas of the body to restore enhanced contours. The procedure has been around for more than three decades and countless women and men have benefitted from it.

Liposuction involves safe, targeted, limited volume fat reduction to tone and sculpt the body in particular areas that are resistant to diet or exercise. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim provides liposuction and various other procedures to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding locations.

Candidacy

An idea and sensational candidate for liposuction cosmetic surgery will ideally have all or most of the following attributes:

  • Unhappy with the appearance of excess fat pockets that are unresponsive to diet or exercise
  • Seeking fat reduction for improved body contours, and not weight loss
  • Having fairly elastic skin and suitable muscle tone
  • Moderate and stable body weight
  • Not having any specific medical condition that could pose risk during surgery or healing
  • Willingness to quit smoking several weeks before surgery
  • Realistic expectations

Areas of Benefit

Liposuction is typically a very successful surgery to reduce the amount of stubborn fat cells in areas such as the thighs, abdomen, flanks or love handles, hips, face and neck, back, upper arms, and knees. Patients should know that it is not a weight loss surgery but a body contouring procedure. Leading plastic surgeon Dr. Kim receives patients from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas for liposuction.

Procedure

Dr. Kim will adopt one of the following less invasive approaches to perform liposuction surgery:

Tumescent Liposuction

Tumescent liposuction is a popular procedure to remove unwanted fat deposits in a safe, less invasive way. The surgeon will inject the targeted area with a local anesthetic and a special saline solution to constrict the blood vessels and minimize blood loss.

Very small incisions will be placed discreetly in the affected area to remove fat cells using a thin cannula and vacuum pressure. The patient will experience less bleeding and less swelling with tumescent liposuction. The recovery will be easier and faster.

VASER Lipo

VASER Lipo is an innovative fat reduction procedure with certain differences from tumescent liposuction. This is an ultrasonic body sculpting technique that involves the use of ultrasound energy to heat and dissolve fatty tissue in a gentle and precise manner.

The ultrasound energy will help to disintegrate the fat cells quickly. The surgeon will use a cannula to remove the liquefied fat cells in a less aggressive manner and without damaging the surrounding healthy tissue.

Recovery

With both these less invasive liposuction techniques, the patient will usually be able to resume their normal activities or go to work in about one week. Mild pain or soreness in the incision areas in the first few days can be managed with pain meds. Vigorous exercises should be avoided for about one month.
