Julie Chen’s Asian-American Cosmetic Surgery

shutterstock_128460254The Talk Show business on American television is extremely competitive and demanding in every conceivable way. It is a field that allows for very little space for women, and even fewer women of color. In such a challenging scenario, talk show host, anchor and producer Julie Chen is an outstanding exception. Julie is of Chinese descent, and married to the President and CEO of CBS. But even a woman of her stature became embroiled in a controversy for something as innocuous as her eyes!

Julie, the host of The Talk and Big Brother TV shows, decided to undergo a double eyelid surgery or Asian blepharoplasty last year due to professional pressure. She in fact gained in popularity with her bigger and more attractive looking eyes after the procedure. However, once she released this news in public, it created an unseemly public controversy. The media and social network users labeled it as a race issue, blaming Julie for trying to “Americanize” her appearance. So what?

Support from Ethnic Patients

Son Kim is a Korean American who has been living in Los Angeles for over 10 years. She received breast augmentation plastic surgery treatment from Dr. Eugene Kim, and has been thrilled with her body ever since she got the treatment. Dr. Eugene Kim produced the desired results, which made Son Kim look and feel 10 years younger than her age.

She consulted several plastic surgeons of Asian descent in Beverly Hills, and finally chose to receive treatment from Dr. Eugene Kim, whom she saw as the perfect fit for what she envisioned in a plastic surgeon. Dr. Kim was attentive and sensitive to her aesthetic needs, and ensured that the procedure achieved the results to meet those needs and expectations.

Once the results of breast augmentation were visible, Son Kim felt deeply happy and fell in love with her body. Her confidence levels rose significantly, and she felt proud of her being and her personality. Kim is aware of the controversy surrounding Julie Chen’s decision to go ahead with blepharoplasty for professional compulsions.

Several of her friends have also received cosmetic eyelid surgery, but their goal is not to change their ethnicity. Their face has brightened up after the surgery, and they look younger. There is nothing “Westernizing” about it at all. The goal of ethnic plastic surgery is not to look westernized, but to look prettier.

Views of Dr. Eugene Kim

Son Kim’s cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Eugene Kim says that he does not approve of labels such as “Westernizing” when an Asian patient undergoes a facial plastic surgery procedure. He says: “As plastic surgeons, we’ve researched what people find the most aesthetically pleasing and we use surgery to achieve this ideal; however, I believe it’s really important to maintain your ethnicity. I tell patients that I am not trying to change your appearance – just enhance what you already have. In my opinion, maintaining a natural look is the best possible outcome.”

According to Dr. Kim, there is no harm in being image conscious and choosing cosmetic procedures to enhance the image. An experienced plastic surgeon will maintain the essential ethnic integrity of the patient, while delivering desirable aesthetic results.

Breast Implant Exchange Surgery Recovery

Breast Implant Exchange | Breast Surgery | Los Angeles | Beverly HillsA plastic surgeon or a cosmetic surgeon can make you look great with one of the most commonly used procedures known as the breast implant. Dr. Eugene Kim from Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA is a great expert who can skillfully perform safe removal of breast implants or their replacements. All you require is about an hour or so under anesthesia to perform the operation to remove or upgrade breast implants. The implants are either silicone gel or saline.

The procedure

A skilled plastic surgeon or a cosmetic surgeon will take utmost care to perform the surgery in a safe manner whether you need replacement or removal of implants. The upgrade is as safe as the removal. When you are sedated or under anesthesia, you will not feel any pain. It doesn’t matter what your choice implant is – silicone gel or saline. Even if you choose just to have your implant removed you will experience negligible to nil deformity. Many patients had their last implants about 15 to 25 years earlier but no complication results to them whether they are going for a removal or upgrade or both.

During the operation, the anesthesiologist keeps a watch over your vital signs. In order to make the recovery more comfortable, a local anesthesia with long term effect is applied over the earlier scar. Meanwhile the cosmetic surgeon carefully studies the scar looking for tumors through the exposed implant. The new implant is placed in the same pocket as the old one, once it is removed. In case of ruptured old implants, dry sponges are used to remove glue like substance before the placement of the new implant.

Recovering from the surgery

Once the surgery is over, the cosmetic surgeon ensures safe and comfortable recovery. In the comfort of the recovery room, there is a nurse to monitor you. The long acting anesthesia locally administered ensures there is nil to little feeling of pain but the overall experience is comfortable. Patients likely to experience nausea due to anesthesia are offered scopolamine patch to make them feel comfortable. While the surgery takes about an hour or a little less, while the rest in the recovery room may last up to about two hours.

Meanwhile the nursing staffs continue to monitor vital signs. Some incision discomfort is possible during the first few days that can be addressed with Tylenol or ibuprofen. However, not everyone experiences pain or discomfort. The pain and discomfort in occasional cases are easily addressed without the risk of any further complication. Also, it must be pointed out as many people ask this question too frequently that there is absolutely no deformity as a result of this surgical produce. There are easy producers that can fix ruptured implants.

Any one going for implants for the first time is bound to feel apprehensive about the procedure. However, there is absolutely nothing to worry if you are under a skilled cosmetic surgeon. This is now a fairly routine procedure. As said earlier, there is absolutely nothing to fear about implant surgery because it involves barley an hour long procedure followed by two to three hours recuperation leaving you feeling young and great once again.

Breast Implants Exchange Surgery Before and After Photos

Picture 1Breast implants exchange surgeries are routinely performed by an accredited plastic surgeon. Most women do not feel comfortable with the shape of their breasts. So, they prefer to go for implants to impart an ideal shape to their breasts. In addition, implants do not always stay for an entire lifetime.

Implants exchange surgeries involves fixing of new implants after the removal of the old implants. Dr. Eugene Kim, an expert cosmetic surgeon handles hundreds of implants fresh as well as exchange at his facility where clients come from Beverly Hills, LosAngeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA and other neighboring areas.

Before the surgery

When someone decides to go for implants or implants exchange, it is critical to learn every aspect of the surgery. The best person to address their queries and worries is the cosmetic surgeon who is going to fix a new implant on you or is going to change your old implant with the new one. The procedure is fairly safe. Yet, safety could be the greatest concern for someone who is getting the implants for the first time. This is the time to speak to your plastic surgeon and spell out your concerns.

The surgery takes less than an hour under local anesthesia. During the course of counseling, your cosmetic surgeon will tell you the step by step procedure of treatment they are going to follow. The surgeon will also examine whether you are a fit case to undergo the procedure. There are certain conditions such as pregnancy or the development of tumor or several other conditions when your surgeon will advise you against the surgery. In addition, the doctor will also examine you and your past medical history so that the procedure could be safely applied .

Talking to your cosmetic surgeon after surgery

After the surgery, your breasts will look a lot more attractive than they looked before the surgery. You may look at some before and after pictures to understand the likely looks and shape of your breasts. You should not expect your plastic surgeon to perform miracles. The “before and after pictures” can give you a realistic impression about the likely outcome after the surgery.

The changes after the surgery will not cause any discomfort or a reason to worry over. Most likely, you will thank your cosmetic surgeon for having made your breasts look so attractive and natural.

After the surgery, you will feel comfortable in a loose fitting outfit and it will also help you heal faster and better. Although there won’t be any pain after the procedure and during the time of healing, but you may experience a slight pain in some cases. The surgeon will administer medication to counter the pain and discomfort that will make you fit and fine once again.

Breasts implants should not worry you because it is known to be a completely safe procedure right until the time you heal completely. However, it is better to speak to your cosmetic surgeon to clarify doubts regarding the procedure and possible complications and after-effects.

Breast Implants Exchange Surgery Cost

Breast Implant Exchange | Breast Surgery | Beverly Hills | Los AngelesDr. Eugene Kim, one of the skilled plastic surgeons in the country, talks about secondary cosmetic procedures such as breast implants surgery and the cost involved in it. These procedures become necessary when the initial procedure leads to pain, discomfort, bleeding and improper size, shapes and texture of the breasts . Depending on the type of work required and the patient’s physical attributes, the costs of the surgery would vary person to person.

Cost of surgery

The surgery involves accessing the implants. Most surgeons prefer accessing them through old wounds left from previous surgeries. This reduces scarring around that area. Once the surgeon has made an entry, he accesses the implant in the pocket in which the old implant is placed. He may have to cut through a certain amount of scarred tissue that would have formed from the previous surgery. The harder and thicker the layer of tissue is, the more difficult it would be for the surgeon to access the pocket and the cost increases. Patients are placed under general anesthesia during this time, just like in the initial surgery.

The cost of the surgery would include many items such as:

  • Hospital and medicine charges
  • Fees for the surgeons and the team
  • Costs for anesthesia and the doctor administering it
  • Ward and surgical room charges
  • Charges for the instruments used for the procedure
  • Costs for buying special post-op garments such as surgical bras to ensure the breasts are well protected and supported during the recovery period.

Overall cost of such a procedure ranges between $8,000 and $12,000.

Follow the advice of your cosmetic surgeon

One of the reasons why Dr. Kim is so successful is because he explains the pros and cons of the procedure in-depth to his patients before he proceeds with it. He ensures patients go through before-after surgery photos, choose the right type of implants and are aware how their body will look after the surgery.

Patients must discuss every aspect of the surgery, right from the dos and don’ts to be followed before surgery, understand the procedure, what happens during it, how the breasts must be taken care of post-surgery and what will be the effects over a period of time. His clients in the West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, and Los Angeles region have been very happy with his surgical results, mainly because they have followed his instructions to a tee.

These procedures alter the way a person looks for the rest of her life. They put the person’s body under a certain amount of stress, pain and the patients also have to suffer some bleeding. So every effort should be made both by the patient and the plastic/cosmetic surgeon to make the procedure a success.

Many people have got this procedure done. Recovery time is less, there are lesser physical adverse effects when the surgery is performed by a skilled surgeon. So don’t hesitate to get this done to satisfy yourself with the way your body looks or to get rid of any first surgery complications.

Breast Implants Exchange Surgery

Breast Implant Exchange | Breast Surgery | Santa Monica | Hollywood CABreast implants exchange refers to the replacement of old or incorrect breast implants placed in the pockets of the breasts. There are several reasons why this secondary procedure becomes necessary. Incorrectly placed implants in the initial surgery, clients dissatisfied with the size or shape of their breasts post the first surgery, leaking or burst implants and change in the type of the implants are the most common reasons.

What you need to know

Many people of Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA and surrounding areas have benefitted from the expert care of renowned plastic surgeon Dr. Eugene Kim. What makes him a sought after surgeon is the fact that he explains the pros and cons of this procedure in detail before embarking on it. He has skillfully performed many such surgeries . More experience means better surgeries with very little or no flaws. He emphasizes that patients must have a good chat about this procedure to see if it is absolutely necessary and what must be done before the surgery is conducted.

The procedure mostly involves accessing the implants from the old points of entry (the wounds left from the first surgery, to avoid further scarring) and getting past any scarring tissue surrounding the implant pocket, re-positioning the implant under or above the chest muscles, as preferred by the client and/or replacing old ones with new ones. Some may prefer to switch from silicone-gel based implants to the saline ones or vice-versa. Others may have to get them replaced because the implants have burst or leaked. This procedure is done using general anesthesia and is much like the initial procedure, the only difference being the reason for the surgery.

What to expect after it?

Dr. Kim has many satisfied clients, thanks to his skill and his through discussion of the effects of the procedure with his patients. By making them go through before-after photos and setting realistic goals, he has helped many clients choose the right breast size and shape and the right kind of implants the second time around, to ensure no further correctional surgeries are required.

After all, your body suffers some amount of pain and blood loss each time such procedures are done, and it is not advisable to do them again and again. Moreover, many patients have to get corrections done because they did not choose the right breast dimensions the first time or did not have clear communication with their plastic or cosmetic surgeon.

Another important aspect of making this procedure a success is diligent post-op care by the patients and their relatives. Patients must take it easy for a few days after the surgery, not do strenuous chores, lift heavy objects, stretch their arms too much or do rigorous exercises. Arrangements must be made at the workplace to ensure they are professionally not affected by the number of leaves they take to undergo the surgery. Wearing comfortable clothes and surgical bras is definitely stressed upon by Dr. Kim. This lets the breasts heal faster, avoids bleeding and gives them the right amount of support to let the implants settle in their pockets correctly.

So for those of you who have been debating getting this secondary surgery done; do understand that while this may not be as major a procedure as the first one, there is still some amount of risk and pain involved. Choose your cosmetic surgeon carefully to get good and long-lasting results.

What is a Mini Tummy Tuck?

Mini Tummy Tuck | Abdominoplasty | Plastic Surgery | Beverly Hills CAA mini tummy tuck is lesser extensive variant of abdominoplasty performed by a cosmetic surgeon in certain cases. This partial tummy tuck surgery involves a smaller incision that is placed just at or above the pubic area, which is quite similar to the incision for a cesarean section. Through this incision, the surgeon will excise loose skin in the lower abdominal area as well as tighten the underlying muscles in that area.

The advantage with a mini tummy tuck is that the procedure is relatively less invasive, risk of complications is reduced and recovery period is shorter. Dr. Eugene Kim is a board certified plastic surgeon providing mini tummy tuck and other surgical and non-surgical procedures to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas.

Suitable Candidates

Partial abdominoplasty or mini tummy tuck is usually considered a good procedure for patients with relatively lesser extent of loose skin to be removed and do not have a significant protrusion of the abdominal wall. If the patient is bothered by the appearance of the abdominal area where the onset of sagging has occurred, or if the patient desires to sculpt a reasonably slim abdomen into a more well-defined shape, a mini tummy tuck may be recommended by the cosmetic surgeon.

A suitable candidate for a mini tummy tuck will typically have concerns with fat accumulation and excess skin in the area below the navel. In addition to localized fat and skin in the lower abdomen, the candidate should ideally have a moderate and stable body weight. The candidate should be a non-smoker, or be committed to quitting smoking several weeks prior to the surgery. Patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and other areas may receive this procedure from Dr. Kim, who is a leading plastic surgeon in the region.

Procedure

Mini tummy tuck procedure is typically performed using mild IV sedation and local anesthesia. Depending on the amount of skin that needs to be excised, the surgeon will determine the size of the incision. In most cases, the scar will be fairly small and placed inconspicuously. Unlike a full abdominoplasty, the surgeon will not have to reposition the belly button during a mini tummy tuck surgery. In some cases, the surgeon may combine mini tummy tuck with liposuction to achieve the desired sculpted shape for the tummy.

During the mini tummy tuck surgery, a relatively smaller section of the abdominal wall will be exposed. The treatment area will typically extend from the incision point to the belly button. Once the underlying lower abdomen muscles are tightened and excess fat is removed through the incision, the surgeon will stretch the skin downward, while removing any loose skin. This will provide a tighter, firmer, and smoother lower abdominal area.

Recovery

Recovery period in a mini tummy tuck is about three to five days, after which the patient may be ready to resume regular activities or go back to work. However, vigorous activities and exercises should be avoided for about four weeks.

Mini Tummy Tuck vs Full Tummy Tuck

shutterstock_88118581Tummy tuck procedure may be recommended by a cosmetic surgeon if the patient is unhappy with the stubborn fat accumulation in the abdominal area, which is resistant to diet or exercise. Some candidates may require a full tummy tuck surgery to achieve their aesthetic goals, while others may need only a partial abdominoplasty or a mini tummy tuck to meet their goals.

As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Eugene Kim explains to his patients various aspects of both full and mini tummy tuck with reference to their body condition so that they can make an informed choice. Patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and other areas have an opportunity to consult with Dr. Kim for a choice between full and mini tummy tuck surgery.

Basic Difference

The cosmetic surgeon will evaluate the location and extent of excess skin in the abdominal area in order to determine whether full or mini tummy tuck procedure may be required. If excess skin is present only in the area beneath the navel, the surgical excision would stop at the navel. The surgeon will pull down and trim the loose skin.

This is a relatively minor procedure, involving shorter duration, and lower downtime. The only scar that may appear in this procedure will be located at the lower abdomen under the swimsuit line. This procedure is called a mini tummy tuck, partial abdominoplasty or a lower tummy tuck.

Stretched Navel

However, in cases where the navel is stretched out or there is substantive loose or wrinkled skin above the navel, it will require a fully tummy tuck procedure. The procedure will involve a surgical detachment of the abdominal skin from the belly button. This will ensure that the upper abdominal skin is not tethered at the navel.

Thereafter, the plastic surgeon will pull the skin downward to tighten both upper and lower abdominal skin. In a full tummy tuck, apart from the scar in the lower abdomen, a small scar around the navel region will show up. Dr. Kim provides both mini and full tummy tuck surgeries to patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and surrounding communities.

Muscle Tightening

Due to aging factor, sedentary lifestyle or a pregnancy, in some cases the abdominal wall fascia that provides support to the abdominal muscles is stretched, and the rectus muscles are separated. In such a situation, when the patient stands up, the belly tends to protrude forward. This happens because the abdominal wall is not able to support the bowels adequately. This condition can be correct usually along with a fully tuck procedure.

The muscles and the fascia are tightened before the skin is tightened. Full tummy tuck becomes essential in such cases because once the fascia is tightened and put in its correct position, the overlying loose skin becomes more apparent, and can be corrected only with a full abdominal skin excision. If fat reduction in the upper abdominal area is necessary, a full tummy tuck will achieve the other. In other cases, lower abdominal fat may be removed just with a mini tummy tuck.

Considering a Tummy Tuck Surgery (Abdominoplasty)?

Abdominoplasty | Tummy Tuck | Los Angeles | Beverly Hills | HollywoodIf you are bothered by the excess accumulation of fat deposits in the abdominal area, and find yourself unable to improve the condition with diet or exercise, you may consider the option of tummy tuck surgery with an experienced cosmetic surgeon. Tummy tuck surgery or abdominoplasty is designed to surgically remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and restore a tighter, firmer, and slimmer abdomen.

Dr. Eugene Kim is a board certified plastic surgeon providing tummy tuck and other procedures for the breast, body and face. Patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and nearby areas have an opportunity to receive safe, proven and effective treatments from Dr. Kim.

Why Choose Tummy Tuck?

Many people mistakenly believe that tummy tuck is suitable only for overweight or obese people. However, the fact is that many people with normal weight tend to develop excess fat around the abdomen due to sedentary lifestyle, hereditary factors, certain medications, previous surgeries, or other reasons. The cosmetic surgeon may recommend tummy tuck procedure ideally for people who have a stable, moderate body weight, but suffer from excess skin and fat around the waist.

Patients should also know what tummy tuck cannot do. It is not a weight loss procedure, and just designed to provide a flatter and firmer appearance of the abdominal area. Tummy tuck is also not a replacement for a balanced diet and a regular exercise program. Such regimen must be continued to prolong the effects of the procedure in the long run. Stretch marks following a pregnancy may or may not go away with tummy tuck.

Who is a Good Candidate?

As an experienced plastic surgeon, Dr. Kim will evaluate the patient’s condition carefully before recommending a tummy tuck surgery. Patients in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, Santa Monica, West Hollywood, CA, and other locations may consult with him to know whether tummy tuck is an appropriate procedure in their case. The suitable candidate for tummy tuck will be an adult who has good health, stable and moderate weight, and having excess fat pockets and loose skin in abdominal area that is resistant to exercise and diet.

Procedure

Tummy tuck procedure may be performed using intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, as the case may be. A major tummy tuck procedure will usually begin with the surgeon placing a horizontal incision on the tummy in the area between the pubic hairline and the navel. The size and shape of the incision will depend on the scale of surgery required.

Weak and separated muscles will be repaired and sutured together through the incision to firm up the abdominal area. Excess fat, tissue, and loose skin will be excised. A second incision near the navel area may be required if the loose skin from upper abdominal area needs to be removed. Incisions will finally be closed with sutures or skin adhesive.

Recovery

Most patients will recover within one to two weeks following tummy tuck surgery. Strenuous exercises should be avoided for at least one month. Recovery will be largely comfortable after the first week of surgery.
